Product Description
The GSR100EX bass offers a lot of what you pay for in an Ibanez bass, without a lot of extras. The fast, sleek Ibanez neck, the quality hardware and the elegant styling you expect from an Ibanez bass are all here. The single humbucker with tone control gets you a consistent, full bass sound and the slender nut diameter makes it easy to play. The tone control is very active and take your tone from a smooth, jazzy walking bass sound to a bright and punchy funk tone. It is lightweight, sounds great and looks cool, and is more than enough bass to do the job in your growing rock band or to practice on and pull your playing skills together. An excellent bass for the lefty beginner to intermediate.

I bought this to have a bass on hand for my two left handed sons, who are both tuba players, and expressed and interest in learning. I have always been impressed with Ibanez quality, even in their entry level instruments, and I was not disappointed when I unpacked this bass. Neck was true, action low, and with a minor bridge adjustment for intonation she was ready to rock. Being right handed myself, I had to play it upside down, but I adjusted quickly. It had a clear, clean tone. No buzzing, or excess string rattle. My 12 year old started learning a little last night, and really enjoyed it. His older brother will be stopping by soon to get started also. Do not hesitate if you are considering this bass. It will not disappoint you..I own several active basses, two that are Ibanez. I guess you could say Ibanez is my sound for bass. I love the way the tone cuts through. Unlike my previous P and J's, Ibanez basses don't have dead spots on the neck. Every note is solid and even.
This bass reminded me of the Ibanez version of a Music Man bass. I love the big humbucker. I had planned on swapping out the pickup for a SD or Basslines, but I was so pleased with the tone I'm going to leave it.
Coming out of the box, the bass was nearly set up. The fit and finish are super. The black finish looks much prettier live than in the picture. The bass looks so sleek and modern.
The neck is obviously an economy neck, but straight and solid. It has a satin finish. The controls are one volume and one tone. Ibanez isn't lying--the tone control is surprisingly musical. Full open it can be snappy, halfway shut it has a midrange bark, and turned off it has a nice low end thump.
I had to adjust the trust rod to bring the neck into straight, then lower the bridge because out of the box the action was too high.
Once done I strapped the bass on. Wow, light! I plugged my new bass into my amp, and happy. It sounds excellent, looks great, and is light on my shoulder. You will be able to use this bass all night in a club and never get fatigued.
I am not one to buy very high end basses, although I've played long enough I could justify a $4000 bass easily. But even when I find a bass that is economy, I will be loyal to it and gig with it if it's reliable. Well, this one is dead reliable.
I plan on owning this one for my life. I love it. Now upgrades-- Ibanez is great about having replacement parts available. I am going to put black "chrome" knobs in place of the standard silver knobs. I own the Ibanez SR500 and it has a beautiful solid neck. I'll replace the neck with that one. Change out the tuners to Ibanez premium black chrome tuners.
Once this is done I will have a bass that will be a good looking, dependable workhorse for many years to come. Who knows, could possibly outlast my performing career LOL.
.Well a year later my love affair with this bass is over. I loved it when I first got it but since then the neck has become so warped it's like playing an archery bow. You can visibly see the strings being pushed down a 1/4 inch which is wayyyy too much for action.
I live in a damp climate and I think that climate raised havoc on the neck. The neck by the way is two piece. About 3/4 of the way up you can see where a block of wood was glued onto the neck for the headstock. I don't know, maybe the issue is I am not that good at setting up basses, but I've never had so much trouble as fighting with this neck. Once I get the bridge set up the way I like the 7th fret position is too high. If I tighten the neck it's too low and buzzes. I also had to file down the string nut as it was way too high for the strings.
The neck is 41mm wide, which is the same width as a Precision bass.
I'm selling the bass really cheap but I think if some youngster with setup skills gets a hold of the bass they might be able to get the neck to get under control and be low and even everywhere. But I've run out of patience. My next bass will probably be the SR370 Pewter black.
I need to mention that when the neck was properly adjusted, it had a fantastic tone. I've been playing high quality Ibanez basses for 30 years and this one was no slouch. If you get one of these and the neck is working properly you will most likely love it especially for the price.
