I bought this because I love the fretless bass sound. An American Standard would have been way too much money. This is a beautiful instrument. It has a great feel and a full wonderful sound. I thought I would have to Sup it up, but that hasn't been the case. It's a top notch bass. The pickups sound great, the pegs hold tune, and it has good sustain.Fender Standard Fretless Jazz Bass Guitar Black Rosewood Fretboard
.I have been playing a fretless for about a year now (a Yamaha RBF 250) which has a p-bass pick up. I recently purchased this instrument (not from here) because I wanted the Jazz version of the fretless. It did not disappoint. For a medium priced instrument (I'm on a limited budget) the feel and play is excellent. For a MIM Jazz the electronics are good and sound has the classic Jazz growl even without the frets. Now I use the fretless about 90% of my playing. I have a MIM fretted Jazz which I also still love, but the fretless has become my main axe. I can use this for R/R, Jazz, Blues, Country, and Contemporary Christian as it is very versatile, and can even do a little slap, but limited. This is a great mid priced fretless and if you are considering moving toward the fretless, this a good instrument to try it out. I like the lined finger board is helps with accuracy and intonation, plus once I get proficient with the neck, I would like to move to an unlined ebony neck. But good instrument, plays excellent, sounds good, it even came with flatwounds, the neck is straight, and the set up was perfect. Overall a very good mid-priced fretless.

.This bass was a great buy! I've been a Geddy Lee fan for years, and one of his early influences was Jaco Pastorius who's main instrument was a fretless bass. I've wanted to buy and play a fretless bass for some time, and now that I own and play one I can't believe I waited so long!
Playing the Fender Fretless has not only expanded my playing ability, but it has expanded how I see the bass as a lead instrument in any band.

.I got a MIM jazz fretted in 1991--one of the earliest ones from Mexico. It had all kinds of problems, like linear volume pots, no shielding, shaky fret leveling, non RW/RP pickups (so no humbucking), and that stupid Fender heel-adjusting truss rod. All these years later I'm re-learning everything that I've forgotten on that same bass, and I thought it would be fun and educational to try fretless. This one matches my old one in appearance, but was vastly better otherwise. It sounds great, and with the headstock truss rod adjustment, I was able get the proper feel without taking the neck off 10 times. Got a great deal on an open box, too--20% off but I could find no sign that it was actually open box. Plastic was still on the pickguard and pickups.
On nit to pick--the nut is too high. It always is on production basses. It should be at about fret height, or right next to the fingerboard on a fretless. This one is low enough on the E string, but way too high on the G.

.Great looking and sounding bass. This is an amazing street less for a novice or experienced player.
