Product Description
The Electro-Harmonix Crying Tone Wah carries on a strong tradition set in the 1960's when the wah wah pedal was introduced. Now, almost half a century later, Electro-Harmonix has solved many of its inherent problems by creating a gorgeous wah with absolutely no moving parts and a super sweet tone. No moving parts means no pots, footswitches or gears to break. All of this innovation without sacrificing any functionality means that it will satisfy even traditionalist. The contoured bottom means it feels like a traditional wah. It's super responsive and amazingly expressive. Instantaneous switching from bypass to effect makes it great for playing live.

This wah pedal is incredible. I have played with various Vox models, the Digitech Whammy, and various models of the Dunlop Cry Baby, and I believe this wah sounds better than them all. Not only is the design genius, easy to operate, and prevents wear and tear (because it has no moving parts, but rather, the whole pedal moves), but it just simply sounds great. Many of the other models I mentioned above would require me to use a separate channel where I could bring down the high frequencies to prevent deafening the crowd. I actually got complaints from audience members that when using the standard Vox wah, the highs would be so piercing that the crowd would actually have to take a few steps back every time I used it. I use an American made Strat and play through an Egnator Rebel, for the record.
Works great on its own, or with distortion or other effects. Also, since the whole thing moves, you simply use the weight of your foot to control it, and can make some really cool tremolo like effects by just shaking your foot a little bit. Also, it does not change levels or compromise tone when turned on like many other wahs.
I was concerned about it not having a button to switch it on and off, but it is very simple to activate and I have yet to accidentally turn it off while using it. It is heavy and sturdy, and has become a main part of my pedalboard which I plan on keeping for a very very long time.
Also, considering the price, it is hard to find anything else of equal or greater quality for the price, let alone anywhere else on the market. Electro Harmonics is a company I have always supported as they have always been innovative and (usually) hold their products to a higher standard.
Get it.
Electro-Harmonix Crying Tone Wah Wah Guitar Effects Pedal
.As you probably already know, the Crying Tone's sweep is gravity-operated. The pedal is fairly heavy and rocks on its base, which means the pivot point is considerably lower relative to your foot and you have to move more weight when you sweep quickly. I use a wah as a variable filter, and the range I use is near the back end of the sweep, meaning I have to keep the pedal rocked way back toward the heel all the time. Not very comfortable. That can be compensated for by setting the high end of the sweep with the pedal tilted further forward than the rest position, and the low end with the pedal not tilted all the way back. However, the on-off function is also moved forward, which means standing on your toe like a ballerina when you switch on or off.
The cradle is not well thought out either. The pedal ends up sliding forward a bit and riding up on the edge of the cradle. The result is that you can't switch the pedal off without bending down to move the pedal back. It's not a bad wah, but it has some design flaws, in my opinion.

.This is a great, solid wah -- really improved design over conventional wah pedals. Nice range of tones and absolutely noise free. My only 'con' is that you can't leave it cocked in one position. There is a cocked wah mode that produces that cool midrange tone like Jimmy Page on early Zep albums, however. EH has a couple nice 'how-to' videos on YouTube. If you want a wah pedal that is easy to use, sounds great, and won't break...this is it.

.I've owned other wahs, vox, crybaby, weeping demon, so I am familiar with what a wah should sound like. This is a very musical wah. Very easy to use, adjust.
NO MOVING PARTS. That means, goodbye, pots, treadles, gears, you name it, all the things that wear out on a wah pedal. GONE!
EHX is well known for their well made pedals. I owned an original BM-PI and Electric Mistress, back in the day, 30 yrs ago, or so.
It feels good to have gone full circle.
Nice product, get one if you like wah, like I do.

.This pedal (and it's several friends from the same company) is truly a revolutionary product. The fact that it HAS NO MOVING PARTS is HUGE. When I sold my Peavey Sanpera 1 which was 4 months old, there was dust in it I couldn't even reach to clean it up for the purchaser. Think of it--no dust, no dirt, no hair or lint EVER getting inside this unit to effect it's operation, sound or looks. It works differently and has some adjusting to, but sounds like what a wha buyer wants. It will be around after you die. There's a video of a car running back and forth over it without it breaking. So they seem to have all the bases covered. I haven't used an ac adapter on it but I have read that this brought in some hum or hiss for the reviewer.
It can be calibrated to be very sensative so that you don't have to move your foot but as little as a 1/4 inch to get a ful sweep. This is a sea changer.

.Pedal is easy to set up, seems very well built and very rugged. Sound is great and it is very responsive.
