Once I saw this thing and heard what it does I had to get it, and at a nice price. I have a Pedaltrain Grande and it has no extra space on it, so I have a lot of pedal; TC Electronics Trinity Reverb, Vox Delaylab, Strymon Mobius, Line 6 FM4, EHX HOG2, Gig FX Chopper, Boss Harmonist, Hexe BitCrusher II, (which is an 8 bit digital distortion pedal) to name most of them, or at least the ones I was most excited about running the RTG through. One problem guitarist like me might have is there is no input, so you need a bypass looper or line selector pedal if you wanna switch between your guitar signal and the RTG. I have a 4 channel true bypass looper, so this wasn't an issue. I just put the RTG into the first channel, and I can switch it on whenever.
I turned it on and it way too loud. I assumed there was an internal gain control I could adjust the volume to match my guitar, but turns out there's not. At least I didn't see one, and the manual didn't mention one. So I ran it through a low gain overdrive pedal with the gain set very clean and the volume set so my ears wouldn't bleed, then I went to town with my effects. Time flies when you're having fun and what felt like 20 mins playing around with the RTG turned out to be an hour.
This pedal is a must have for any effects enthusiast, it's the perfect toy if you like to tweak your effects while their running. Making effects noise usually means hitting your guitar every time the signal's dying down. The RTG generates it's own signal, so you can just turn it on, put you guitar behind you, and start twisting knobs. The RTG is easy to understand. Rate for speed and a Glide switch, which is a cool function. Basically instead of jumping from one note to another it rises and falls into the next pitch, or "glides" into it. It's kinda annoying on faster settings, but slower settings sound pretty cool.
So the volume issue for me was a disappointment. I was hoping I could switch it on in between songs or use it for some kinda spacy Mars Volta-esque bridge. Hopefully someone out there will put out a mod to fix it. I'm not too good with that stuff, but I think the solution would be as simple as mounting a volume pot into the pedal and wiring it between the output and the RTG circuit board.
As the pedal stands in it's stock setting, I can't use it for playing unless I mess with my distortion pedal's setting with would be a pain to do every time I want it on. But it's still fun to play with.
Electro-Harmonix RTG Random Tone Generator Guitar Effects Pedal
.What a wacky device. I bought 2 of these to try out some funky stuff and sure enough i got some strange tones. The output level is very high on these pedals so you will want to attenuate it with some sort of mixer or vol pedal. Overall they are a trip to play with makes me feel like I'm on a spaceship adding effects after the effect makes it really shine. only downside is that it is truly random and has no way of picking the sounds out of the synth via midi or any input for that matter. All you can do is change the speed and add a portamento glide between the notes. Also I think it shocked me while I was playing with it, o well I'll die doing what I love.
Electro-Harmonix RTG Random Tone Generator Guitar Effects Pedal
.This is the strangest pedal I own, and it's not really a pedal. It sounds great when running straight into a PA, and sounds even better when you pass the signal through another effect or effects. At slow speeds with the glide function on you can get bass notes that shake the room. I'm going to incorporate the RTG into our stage show but I'm not sure how yet. My cat loves it too for some strange reason!
